Farm Manager and Viticulturist
Altus van Lill, the farm manager and viticulturist of Alto Estate, joined the team in March 2025.
Altus van Lill, who was appointed as the farm manager and viticulturist at Alto Estate in March 2025, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Growing up in Ceres and Rawsonville, he began his agricultural journey at Deetlefs Wine Estate before working at Jordan Wine Estate in California. Over the past decade, he has lived and worked in Stellenbosch and Durbanville.
Altus is particularly passionate about Cabernet Sauvignon, calling it "The King of Red Grapes" due to its rich history and prominence in top wines. He is committed to innovative practices, such as using drones for spraying young vines to reduce soil compaction and carbon footprint. Altus believes that with adaptable vineyard practices and new varieties, viticulture can thrive despite climate change.
He enjoys spending time on the rugby field or exploring antique shops with his wife, Janette, a winemaker. Altus' first harvest at Alto has been marked by the exceptional terroir, which he believes is key to producing outstanding red wines.
