Tammy Claasen

Assistant Winemaker
Durbanville Hills Wine
Tammy Claasen, assistant winemaker at Durbanville Hills, owes her passion for wine to growing up at the foothills of the Helderberg.

Tammy spent an idyllic childhood on a fruit farm (now a wine farm) and from a young age knew she wanted to pursue a career in agriculture.  While at high school, a career day introduced her to the fascinating world of wine – before this moment she never knew that one could study to become a winemaker. She shadowed her father in the trade shortly after he entered the wine industry, and was instantly hooked!

She completed the BScAgric in Viticulture and Oenology degree at the University of Stellenbosch and it was during her final year harvesting at a local winery and being part of the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé programme that she realised she belonged in the cellar.

Her approach to winemaking is minimal intervention, guided by the quality of the fruit, and using old and new blending techniques in crafting exceptional wines. She thoroughly enjoys the versatility of working with Shiraz and Chenin Blanc grapes and spent a few harvests at one of the top Shiraz producers in the world where her affinity for this varietal was sparked.

From the moment she walked through the Durbanville Hills cellar doors, she felt a sense of belonging, like coming home to a warm embrace. The stunning vineyards, vibrant energy and the passionate people all resonated with her.

When Tammy is not living her dream as a winemaker, she crafts scented natural candles and enjoys singing with her music-loving family.
