Lukas graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural College in 1997 as qualified winemaker. He then worked for 3 years (1998 – 2000) at La Motte Wine Estate in Franschhoek as assistant winemaker to Jacques Borman. In 1998 he worked a harvest in the Rhone Valley in France at Saint Joseph where he gained tremendous experience working with Shiraz for which that area is famous for.

Lukas Wentzel is recognised as one of South Africa’s top winemakers, known for his dedication to crafting wines of distinction. After graduating from Elsenburg Agricultural College in 1997, Lukas gained invaluable experience as assistant winemaker to Jacques Borman at La Motte Wine Estate from 1998 to 2000. During this time, he also worked a harvest in the Rhône Valley, France, specifically at Saint-Joseph, where he honed his skills in crafting exceptional Shiraz. Since joining Groote Post in 2000, Lukas has been instrumental in elevating the estate’s wines, contributing to its continued growth and success.

His winemaking philosophy centres around balance, ensuring harmony from vineyard to bottle. This ethos is mirrored in his character—calm, methodical, and driven. Lukas is also a dedicated contributor to the wine industry, serving on the board of Sauvignon Blanc SA and playing an active role in his local community.

In addition to his professional achievements, Lukas is a family man, married to Tersia, with two sons, Wian and Dewald. Outside the cellar, he is passionate about sports and fitness and values spending quality time with friends and family.
