Charles Pohl

National Sales Manager
Vondeling Wines
Charles Pohl is a seasoned wine professional and current wine buyer at Woolworths, with a comprehensive career spanning fine dining service, cellar production, and sales management.

Charles Pohl’s career in the wine industry began in the high-stakes world of fine dining at Rust en Vrede, where he worked under the mentorship of Neil Grant and David Higgs. It was here, in 2010, that he completed his first wine courses, sparking a deep interest that led him to serve as a sommelier (although he was uncertified). During his tenure, the restaurant was recognised as the best service establishment in South Africa for three consecutive years – an era Charles remembers for its electric energy and a passion for food and wine that was second to none.

Seeking a foundational understanding of the craft, Charles transitioned from the floor to the cellar to complete a full harvest at Guardian Peak. This experience proved eye-opening, providing him with a technical grasp of production and the intricate realities of how wine is made. He eventually moved into the commercial side of the industry, joining the Rust en Vrede sales team, where he focused on the coastal regions and the development of the Jean Engelbrecht portfolio.

In 2018, Charles was appointed national sales and marketing manager at Vondeling Wines. Working closely with Matthew Copeland, he was instrumental in building the brand’s presence across both the retail and restaurant sectors.

Following the global pandemic, Charles sought a new challenge within the industry. A pivotal conversation with Rob Gower led him to his current position as a Wine Buyer at Woolworths, where he applies his diverse background in service, production, and brand management to one of South Africa’s premier retail portfolios.

Throughout his professional journey, Charles has remained dedicated to formal education. A student of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) since 2012, he has progressed through Level 2 and Level 3 and is currently in the final stages of completing the prestigious WSET Diploma.
