Ignus Ferreira, the dynamic young winemaker at Stellenbosch Reserve, has had a unique journey into the world of wine. Born and raised in De Aar without any agricultural roots, his interest in wine was sparked during family holidays to Kleinmond. While driving the long road past vineyards in the Breedekloof, his father would explain the process of winemaking, and so the wine seed was planted.
Ignus pursued a degree in Viticulture and Oenology at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and his hands-on learning began with a year-long internship at Pulpit Rock winery in the Swartland. He then gained valuable experience in viticulture at Nuwerus in Riebeek West, solidifying his belief that great wines are made in the vineyard.
Ignus’ career growth within the company has been guided by the mentorship of Danielle le Roux and Coenie Snyman. He started as a harvest intern at Guardian Peak in 2019, working alongside Danielle, who quickly recognized his talent. When she moved to Rust en Vrede as head winemaker, Ignus joined her there, further honing his skills. In 2023, after several successful vintages, Ignus took the helm at Stellenbosch Reserve. He has a particular love of Syrah, which has only deepened throughout his career, having explored its versatility both in the vineyard and the cellar. When he’s not crafting exceptional wines, Ignus enjoys life on the Stellenbosch Reserve property with his trusty bull terrier, Spook
