Pieter Bekker, winner of the 2022 Distell Inter-Hotel Challenge Wine Steward of the Year, continues to build an impressive international hospitality career based in Dubai. His award included a prestigious, guild-edged invitation to Ashford Castle in Ireland, a flagship property within the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, where he immersed himself in the culture, heritage, and finesse of one of Europe’s most iconic luxury hotels.
Certified as a SASA Junior Sommelier, Pieter was the recipient of the Distell Inter-Hotel Challenge Scholarship, which he won while working at the Taj Cape Town, a pivotal moment that helped shape his professional trajectory.
Currently in Dubai, Pieter stepped into the role of Operations Manager for the Pool and Beach Department at Atlantis The Royal, overseeing service standards and food and beverage operations. Toward the end of last year, his portfolio expanded to include the management of a beach restaurant and event space—an experience he describes as both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Despite his international commitments, Pieter remains closely connected to South Africa through his company, Teist-In. While day-to-day operations have been temporarily paused, the business continues to evolve. Recent milestones include the launch of his first Airbnb, where Teist-In supplies curated wines and snacks for guests, and an exciting new venture into winemaking. Harvest is about to begin on his first release: a small-batch Cap Classique, Donovan Ackermann - Franschhoek Custom Crush, crafted in the style of a grower Champagne.
Balancing growth, ambition, and perspective, Pieter remains focused on staying grounded while keeping his finger firmly on the pulse of hospitality and wine—locally and globally.
