Like much of the Devon Valley, the estate was originally planted with table fruit.

The first vines were planted in 1985, under the supervision of Jan Boland Coetzee. Hans Froehling and Leon Stemmet bought the property in 1988.

The first vintage was 1989. The first winemaker was Neil Ellis. He was succeeded by Marinus Bredell in the mid-1990s. Since 1997 the winemaker has been Simon Smith.

Mike Johnston, UK-based Master of Wine, Jonathan Pedley and Hendrik Kotzé the new team at Louisvale. Mike Johnston commenced a phased purchase of Louisvale in January 2001. Full management control was assumed in October 2002.

Mike Johnston is a Scottish property developer who owns the Carnoustie Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa. Hendrik Kotzé is a leading Cape Town lawyer. They are joined on the board by property expert, Martin Delaney.
