Newald Marais - Winemaker

Newald brings maturity, experience and a creative flair to Juno Wine Company's maiden project, turning each wine into a labour of love.

Renowned winemaker, Newald Marais, graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural College in 1975 having studied viticulture and pomology. The next four years saw him working under Gunter Brozel of Nederburg Wines as assistant winemaker. In 1980 Newald left for Germany for two years to further his studies in viticulture at the Weinbouschule Weinsburg.

Upon his return to South Africa he re-joined Nederburg Wines and the following five years saw him being primarily tasked to be in charge of the Nederburg Auction wines.

In 1987 Newald joined Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery as Zonnebloem's sparkling and white winemaker. Two years later he was back at Nederburg in the enviable position of head winemaker.

In 2000 Newald was working with Distell, an amalagamation of SFW and Distillers, as head winemaker and consultant to the affiliated wineries, until 2002 when he became independent consultant to the wine industry. His vast experience in the winemaking business is further attributable to twelve years travelling abroad to the wine growing regions of Europe, America and Australia to enrichen his technical experience. Newald also visited countries such as Japan, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom to explore market opportunities.

Newald brings maturity, experience and a creative flair to Juno Wine Company's maiden project, turning each wine into a labour of love.
