Environment

Environmental management is a high priority at La Motte and is factored into the long-term strategy as well as daily running of the estate.

Examples of environmental care include the protection of precious natural flora known as ‘fynbos’ on the adjoining Wemmershoek mountains and adherence to organic principles in the production of grapes, flowers and ethereal oils.

La Motte was one of the first wine estates to be awarded the coveted ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification. The estate also complies with ISO 9000:2000 Certification, is a member of the Green Mountain Eco Route in the Groenlandberg area, and has received Champion status of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative. La Motte, as well as its Nabot farm in the Walker Bay coastal area, are committed to organic farming principles by which the use of fertilisers, synthetic pesticides, plant growth regulators and animal feed additives are eliminated or largely avoided.

Organic Farming

In 2002 La Motte started an organic production unit on its Nabot farm near the village of Bot River in the Walker Bay coastal area. This eco-efficiency programme, mindful of the improvement and well-being of the agricultural ecosystem, was implemented to optimise the use of resources through eliminating or largely avoiding the use of fertilisers, synthetic pesticides, plant growth regulators and animal feed additives and through recycling and re-use in order to reduce capital and operating costs and alleviate the cost to the environment.

La Motte has been farming organically since 2007 and the estate, as well as its Nabot farm, have been awarded full SGS Certification – an International Organic Production Standard that acknowledges good agricultural practice in organic production.

All La Motte and Nabot grapes processed in the estate’s cellar originate from organically grown vineyards.
