Our Vineyards & Cellar

The fertile Robertson Valley is the birth place of a wide variety of fine wines. Situated some 160 kilometres from Cape Town, it is bordered by the lower reaches of the Breede River to the south and the spectacular Langeberg Mountains to the north. In this sought-after wine producing region, a variety of meso-climates and soil conditions create a side spectrum of terroirs, allowing us to produce an exciting diversity of wine styles.

The rich soils on the riverbanks are deep and cool and thus ideal for the growing of choice Sauvignon Blanc grapes. On the lower mountain slopes, the shale and sandstone soils are rich in lime with a high pH, making these sites perfect for the cultivation of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Higher up against the mountains, the gravelly soils with clay fractions are reserved for early ripening cultivars such as Chardonnay.

The low annual rainfall (only 280mm) is supplemented by controlled drip irrigation from the Breede River to alleviate stress to our vines. Vineyards are planted in a north-west to south-east direction to enjoy the benefit of the prevailing sea breezes which cool the grapes during summer, extending the ripening period and therefore allow the grapes to develop an abundance of flavour.

From vineyard through vinification, every step is closely monitored to preserve the precious yield of the vine. To ensure that our Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes reach the cellar in prime condition, they are picked in the cool, early hours of the morning. Dedicated cellar practices such as cold fermentation, further enhance the quality of our white wines.

Our new, state-of-the-art underground cellar was completed in 2000 to accommodate the increasing volumes in red wine production. In designing the cellar, great care was taken to minimize the movement of fruit, juice and wine, thus ensuring optimum quality and efficiency. Open fermenters, rotor tanks and closed fermenters enable our winemakers to create different styles of red wine, which when blended, reward with the rich complexity for which our wines have become renowned.
