ZONNEBLOEM

There's nothing staid about Zonnebloem, one of South Africa's longest-established brands. Elegantly and decisively, it is outrunning its rivals, growing well ahead of the South African market and courting a new generation. It's just as ably building a following in Europe and Asia. The producers attribute its enduring appeal to an ability to craft classical wines styled in a gracefully modern idiom. They promise an abundance of flavour, backed by structure or as cellar master Deon Boshoff puts it "to match grace with power". Reds are attractively soft-textured, he says, supported by smooth but firm tannins with the ability to age.

Zonnebloem wines are celebrated for their enduring appeal and that makes them classics. Virtually every year at the Nederburg Auction, vintage Zonnebloem wines fetch amongst the highest prices. Last year was no exception, when wines from the 1960s to 1980s fetched between R30 000 and R20 000 a six-bottle case. Today, while Zonnebloem is making its wines in a contemporary idiom, the cellar is also making them to appeal to future generations, so that when they are 40, 50 and 60 years old, they will still retain their desirability.

The cellar sources its fruit from an enviable list of 330 vineyard blocks, many of them belonging to some of the Cape's best wine-growers. Carefully nurtured relationships built over generations ensure a supply of top-quality grapes for the range. Annelie Viljoen leads the viticultural team, working closely with suppliers to bring in grapes with pronounced fruit flavours and good acidity. All fruit is hand-picked.

Boshoff and his dynamic young winemaking team come with impressive experience. He is supported by Bonny van Niekerk, who makes the reds, Elize Coetzee, who makes the whites and a new generation of assistant winemakers in Praisy Dlamini, Michelle Louw and James Ochse. Whether locally or internationally, they have been mentored by top talents.

The brand's positioning of "crafting contemporary classics" is given imaginative expression through its collaboration with leading South African designers. Haldane Martin, for one, was commissioned to create wine service tables, decanters and retail merchandising units. Zonnebloem continues to align with contemporary décor and design that are based on classical principles.
