About us

Kings Kloof was established by Dennis and Noel Newton-King following their purchase of the upper mountain portion of the original Parel Vallei Farm in Somerset-West in 1936.

Kings Kloof was established by Dennis and Noel Newton-King following their purchase of the upper mountain portion of the original Parel Vallei Farm in Somerset-West in 1936.

At that time, Dennis was called a ‘crazy Englishman’ for wanting to farm so high up on the Helderberg. However, Dennis discovered the beauty and rich deep soils whilst on a picnic on the mountain and knew that this area held great potential.

The farm measures 77 ha in total of which 14 ha are currently under cultivation and the rest of the farm is being rehabilitated into its original Fynbos vegetation.

Jeannie Dennis and Noel started farming berries and olives followed shortly thereafter.

In 1974, Pierce and Jeannie Newton – King moved onto Kings Kloof to take over the running of the farm from Granny Noel. Jeannie took over the actual farming duties and started replacing the berries and olives with plums, peaches and vines.

Jeannie developed Kings Kloof into a small but successful exporter of plums and peaches which was a remarkable achievement given that she was one of only a few woman farmers in those days.

Today, the farm is run by Jeannie’s son Richard, who to date has replanted 4 ha of vines and with the close support of one of Stellenbosch's leading wine producers, is bringing the vineyards to its high quality potential.

Kings Kloof – Today

With the growth of Somerset – West and the Helderberg, Kings Kloof is fortunate to command the highest slopes of the Helderberg overlooking the Town. The views from all areas of the farm are breath-taking.

The south facing slopes benefit from the cool sea breeze, ideal for white cultivars such as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, although our Shiraz and Merlot blocks are also performing well.

Our vineyards are unique also because there are no other vineyards that surround the farm, despite the densification of the Helderberg and prolifiration of vineyards in the region.
