Terroir

Romond Vineyards, situated on the lower slopes of Helderberg West Peak, just 4 kilometers from the shores of False Bay, benefits from both maritime and montane influences. It is said that if one can see both Table Mountain and False Bay, that spot will grow good wine - a theory proved true here, in the shelter of the Helderberg.

The concept of terroir, so well understood in France, is still sometimes a contentious issue in our southern climes.

The consumer’s focus, until recently, has been on cultivar rather than provenance. Yet the top end wines from South Africa’s different wine-growing areas, so varied in aspect, have shown that the notion of terroir exists worldwide.

The mountain tempers the Cape’s notorious South Easter, calming it to a gentle, refreshing and cleansing breeze, to the benefit of both vine and man.

The West Peak is known for producing world class Cabernets - Sauvignon and especially Franc. The quality of the REBUS Cabernet Franc attests to this. While the focus has been on Cabernet, we are delighted to confirm that Merlot, notoriously finicky about its surroundings, has found a home here planted on an ancient watercourse.

Conveniently close to the town centre, this is still an unspoiled natural area; the habitat of numerous animals rarely encountered in proximity to populated areas. Caracal, porcupine, duiker, mongoose, genet, and grysbok are either resident or regular visitors. Leopard are occasionally encountered (closely), most recently in July 2013.

The planting of over 200 indigenous trees has attracted a twitcher’s delight of bird species. Resident raptors include Spotted Eagle Owl, Barn Owl and Jackal Buzzard, who, using the perches erected in the vineyards, do a sterling job of controlling pests.

We believe that healthy, balanced soil supports healthy, balanced vines. Minimal cultivation is practised; reliance is placed instead on annual cover crops, generous mulching and the judicious use of chemicals.
