Fairview Pegleg Carignan 2004

Veritas 2006 - Silver
Colour: Vibrant deep crimson red.
Aroma: Dark, spicy aromas, with cloves, nutmeg and some liquorice. Ripe black currants and black cherries.
Palate: Rich medium body, with firm tannins, and a long finish.

There is very little Carignan grown in South Africa. We are very excited by the quality of the grapes which we accidentally found whilst looking for old vine Pinotage.

ageing : Drinks well now, but will improve with a few years in the bottle.

in the vineyard : Carignan was picked ripe from the Basson's vineyards in the Perdeberg area. This 25 year old vineyard receives drip irrigation, which assists through the hot dry summers. The vineyard grows on Malmesbury shale soils, contributing to the complexity of the wine. The yields of the vineyard in 2004 was 6.29 tons per hectare, and the wine shows lovely complexity and rich, ripe fruit.

about the harvest: Carignan was picked ripe on 14 March 2004. Grapes were destalked and lightly crushed.
