Pieter Le R. Carstens

Slanghoek cellar-master Pieter Carstens knows the Breede River Valley well. Before his new appointment, he worked as winemaker/manager at McGregor Cellar for three years and prior to that he was also assistant-winemaker at Boland Cellar, winemaker at Koelenhof Cellar and manager/winemaker at Groot Eiland. His extensive experience also includes a season at Dry Creek Vineyards in California and visits to the winemaking regions of Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Italy.

Lately, his special interest in wine marketing also took him on tours to the UK, including various visits as exhibitor at the London Wine Trade Fair, and to Poland. After matriculation at Paarl Gymnasium, Carstens finished his diploma course at Elsenburg Agricultural College as top student in cellar technology. He also did BComm studies at the University of South Africa. He is an experienced wine show judge, with various certificates in that discipline, and serves regularly in Veritas and SA Young Wine Show panels, as well as on the Wine and Spirit Board. He belongs to two wine circles and is an enthusiastic jogger. Pieter is married to Alta - they have two children.
