JD (Johannes Diederick) Pretorius joined the Steenberg team as winemaker in 2009. At just 28 years old, JD’s passion for winemaking is unparalleled, and his enthusiasm for all aspects of the craft has made him an asset to the team.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch in 2007, JD threw himself into exploring multiple aspects of the winemaking world. A brief period as the Cellar Hand at Beyerskloof Wine farm was followed by an appointment as Harvest Supervisor at Graham Beck Wines.

In 2008, JD ventured to California to work the harvest for Stonestreet Wines in the Sonoma Valley. Upon his return to South Africa, JD joined Steenberg for a short contract. General Manager and Cellar Master of Steenberg, John Loubser, soon realised JD’s potential, and invited him to stay on as winemaker. Today, JD continues to add his fresh perspectives to the impressive portfolio of wines at Steenberg.

Inspired by Steenberg’s reputation as one of South Africa’s top White Wine Cellars, JD’s unaffected passion for winemaking continues to take Steenberg Vineyards from strength to strength.
