Born, raised and educated in Stellenbosch, Christoff de Wet is no stranger to the winelands. Growing up, wine was a core feature at the dinner table and this sparked his curiosity in wine and winemaking.

With very little knowledge of winemaking, Christoff embarked on a gap year to Sonoma County, California where he completed his first harvest. Here, he developed his love and passion for winemaking and upon his return to South Africa, Christoff enrolled at Elsenburg Agricultural College where he pursued Viticulture and Cellar Technology.

Christoff, a seasoned traveller has completed several harvests in the United States and Australia. Following working with estates such as Koelenhof, Mulderbosch, Morgenhof and Hazendal Christoff embarked on a year of travel and returned to South Africa in 2010. Following a harvest with Adam Tas Cellar, he joined the Fleur du Cap winemaking team at Die Bergkleder, where he has been since 2010.

Christoff compares being a winemaker to a cross between an artist and a doctor. He finds the art of creating a product and the science behind transforming something as simple as grapes to a complex wine most intriguing. Seeing friends and strangers enjoying wine that he has helped to create is what he enjoys most about his job. He firmly believes that the winemaking process begins in the vineyards and that with good grapes and a dedicated winemaker it is possible to craft an exceptional wine.

This point of departure strikes a chord with Fleur du Cap’s philosophy of Regional Excellence. Inspired by nature and harking back to more traditional, hands-on winemaking practices, the Fleur du Cap winemaking team manages to unlock the natural expression inherent in the best grapes from select parcels of vines grown in a diverse range of locations each selected for their unique combinations of soils, climate, aspect and orientation that is best suited to a particular grape variety throughout the Western Cape.

Thus far one of the highlights of his career has been his time spent in Australia completing a vintage along with 22 interns from around the world. Outside of winemaking, Christoff enjoys travelling and sharing his experiences with family, friends and colleagues.
