Thys Smith

Winemaker
Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate
I studied BSC Molecular biology and biotechnology at the University of Stellenbosch.

I started my winemaking career completely by accident. In 2013 I was looking for a new lab position when a winemaker contacted me and gave me the news that their lab position has already been filled. He proceeded to explain that he has a similar degree and proposed that I be a cellar hand. This was possibly the biggest life changing event of my life. As soon as I started my first harvest I fell in love with the art of winemaking, it was at this point I decided that I will pursue this passion as a career. I worked at Lourensford estate for 3 vintages and in 2014 I enrolled in a training program in the US where I worked at Roth Estate focusing on Chardonnay and Bordeaux blends.

I love strange and interesting wines with great food (eating it and making it) and I prefer making white wine, with a focus on Chenin blanc.

My favourite drink is a well-aged Bordeaux blend or a well-crafted IPA and my favourite leisure activities is reading, playing games with friends or having a braai.
