The small town, Klawer, lies at the foot of the Matzikama Mountains on the banks of the beautiful wine-producing Olifants River valley. With the majestic Matzikama Mountains in the east and the Olifants River in the west, Klawer offers the visitor a tranquil countryside, emerald green vineyards, magnificent wildflowers, combined with the well-known hospitality of the West Coast. The town derives its name from the wild clover that grows profusely here, especially after good winter rains. During the flower season in Spring, depending on the preceding winter's rainfall, this arid landscape is transformed into a flower paradise.
The irrigation canal was constructed by Italian prisoners of war and is a unique sight in Klawer. This siphon draws water from the western to the eastern canal of the river and forms an integral part of the irrigation system of the Olifants River Valley. This irrigation scheme is an open concrete canal system (280km of main canals and 60km of secondary canals) and originates in the Bulshoek Dam close to Clanwilliam.
The Olifants River truly is the vein of the Olifants River Valley. The agricultural activities offer a variety of fruit and vegetables such as table grapes, potatoes, watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes, and many more. These fruits and vegetables are also exported to the international market.
