In 1864, Uiterwyk Estate became the property of the De Waal family, which by then had been making wine for four generations in Cape Town and Constantia. Today, the ninth generation of this family - and the fifth generation on Uiterwyk - is maintaining their winemaking tradition.
At De Waal Wines, one can travel through history to the modern era of our wine industry because, here, the best of the past has been retained while adjustments and innovations have been incorporated to keep in step with present and future demands. Old and new exist here in perfect harmony.
Tradition is a word that is often used when wine estates are mentioned. However, it is seldom more apt than when attributed to the De Waals and Uiterwyk Estate. It comes to mind when you stop in front of the estate's impressive manor house, because the date on the gable reads 1791. So, too, when you enter the ancient, cool, dark old wine cellar, where red wine is being matured in French oak barrels, This cellar, built in 1798, was used continually for wine-making until 1978.
Pieter de Waal, present owner of De Waal Wines, attained a B.Com Degree at the University of Stellenbosch. He then gained experience in the marketing of wine while working at Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley, California.
Uiterwyk was once the last farm on the wagon trail from Stellenbosch to Cape Town. Today, the estate - and its people - is in the centre of the wine industry and is keeping pace with every new development. Its traditional roots are deep, but there is plenty of youthful vitality.
DeWaal wines are available from the estate and at specialist wine shops, gourmet restaurants and hotels.
