Welcome to Spotswood Wines

History: In 2007, father and son Bill and Nick Spotswood, the former retired from an international confectionery business and the latter a civil engineer from Polokwane, bought a Blaauwklippen Road property in Stellenbosch’s ’Golden Triangle’

They inherited a young vineyard with Chardonnay, Shiraz, Viognier, and a rare South African red wine varietal, Durif. The first bottling of this unique grape was in 2011.

Since then, Spotswood Wines has produced 7 harvests of Durif – 2016 being the inaugural vintage of a South African first-of-a-kind Durif Dry Rose.

Down the Road (Home of Spotswood Wines)
We have the following grapes under vine:
• Chardonnay: 4160 vines
• Shiraz: 6800 vines
• Viognier: 350 vines
• Durif: 1550 vines

We make wine from all of the varietals and supply selected top estates with some of our grapes

The Wine and Process

The Durif Dry Rose is a unique wine being, to our knowledge, the only Rose made from this cultivar on the market. It is quite pink due to the very dark colour of the grape skins. The wine spends the bare minimum of time in contact with the skins to make it as light as possible. The flavours are very special - dry but fruity with strong berry undertones. We do our own growing of the grapes on the farm and Stellenzicht Cellar do our vinification under the control of Cellar Master Guy Webber.
We also make a small quantity (500 bottles) of superb quality of our Viognier at Kleinood Cellar under the guidance of winemaker Gunter Schultz. All our wines are unblended (100% of the stated cultivar).

The Family

Three generations of Spotswoods live on Down The Road Farm. Everyone is involved on the farm in some way :

• Gogo harvests, prunes and keeps everyone fed and happy
• Billa is the viticulturalist and jack-of-all-trades; he sprays, harvests, prunes, manages the farm, fixes anything and everything and sometimes drinks wine
• Tanya does the creative stuff – website, fliers, designs
• Nick does the marketing and sometimes drinks wine
• Erin helps with the olives and keeps everyone amused
• Kyran kicks his soccer ball and plays cricket

The grandchildren have a fortunate existence and have the best of both worlds. When their parents irritate them, they escape to Gogo and Billa for tea, chocolate chip cookies, crunchies, and TV!
