Our Winemaker

A self-proclaimed Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz lover who heads for the waves every chance he gets Welmoed winemaker Bernard Claassen has his hands full in the cellar creating the great value-for-money, easy-drinking wines that form the Welmoed portfolio.

He studied Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch and completed his first harvest at Welmoed while still a student. He joined the company of wine people in 2004.

What does your job entail?
I oversee the whole process of winemaking, from the vineyards to the final bottle product.

How would you describe your winemaking style?
I’m a traditionalist and like to keep things as simple as possible, but there is a touch of modern and a bit of adventure in there as well.

What are your winemaking goals?
I’m still striving to make the perfect wine, but in the meantime…….. to created wines of exceptional quality that really showcase the grape variety and the terroir it comes from, across all the ranges so that it can be enjoyed by everyone.

What's the first thing you do once the harvest is complete?
Take my family for a relaxing weekend away to the Southern Cape.

What's your favourite drink?
A good crisp Sauvignon blanc or Riesling, but also a big robust Shiraz.

What do you drink when you are not drinking your own wines?
Ice cold Beer on a warm day, the rest of the time, any other wine from anywhere in the world.

What is your best food and wine memory?
Every meal with wine is a memory for me, but when friends and family enjoying it with me, it make it even more special. If I have to choose one, it would be sitting on the beach around the fire, sunset, friends having a class of Credo Chenin blanc while preparing a paella potjie with what we dived out earlier in the day.

What do you want to be served at your last supper?
Big piece of rare rump steak with our Credo Shiraz/Merlot/Viognier.

If money was not an object, I would...
be chilling on the beaches in Bali.

What is your dream car?
One that can fly, so that I don’t have to sit in any traffic.

If you weren't a winemaker, what would you be doing?
See no. 9... or otherwise, if I had the talent, professional sport.
