Bovlei Cellar is the second oldest wine cellar in South Africa (Tulbagh Cellar being the oldest one). It was established on 5 August 1907 and is thus more than 100 years old.

It is situated near the foot of Bain’s Kloof Pass in the picturesque town of Wellington that is surrounded by the Hawekwa mountains, Limietberge and Groenberg. Bovlei Cellar is the winery in Wellington with the most beautiful and clearest view of The Man of Wellington, a rocky formation which is part of the Limietberge. This formation is only visible in the late afternoon sun and is best viewed from the Bovlei Cellar balcony.

In the past 103 years, Bovlei has had only eight chairmen. Although a co-operative cellar, the families who have been involved with it since 1907, are still reflected in the composition of the board and their descendants are still members of Bovlei.

There have been two father and son combinations as chairmen of the board: the Cillie’s and Smit’s: P D Smit and his son, H F Smit, served as chairmen of Bovlei in the past century, as well as S J Cillie and his son, P J Cillie, the present chairman.

The cellar has a small and exclusive membership of 32 wine farmers and produces 8 000 tons per annum. It is a wine producer of note, winning many top awards, for its outstanding quality wines.

85% of all new vineyard plant material comes from Wellington and Bovlei’s 32 members use this in their vineyards to produce top quality grapes that are used in Bovlei’s brands. The summer temperatures on members’ farms are 2 deg C cooler than the town and the rest of the wine growing region, due to their location, providing better conditions for wine making. The wines are produced from grapes grown in selected="true" vineyards in the sunny Wellington region with its wide variety of micro-climates and terroirs. Therefore, they are wines of great character.

THE RANGES
The Bovlei wines range from premium - the Bovlei Cellar range - to super-premium, the Centenary and Vineyard selected="true" ranges, that also include a range of port-style wines.

The two wine makers, Frank Meaker and Jacques Theron, are responsible for wine production.
