This family-run farm is owner managed by Bernard and Lola Nicholls and was originally purchased by Lola's father, Martin Hunting in December 1969. It was then handed on by him, some thirty years later, in 1999.

This family-run farm is owner managed by Bernard and Lola Nicholls and was originally purchased by Lola's father, Martin Hunting in December 1969. It was then handed on by him, some thirty years later, in 1999.

Bernard threw caution to the wind and made a career change from Mechanical Engineer to Wine Farmer and has become fully involved in the day to day operations at Mitre's Edge.

Lola's passion for Bordeaux style wines led to replanting the vineyards with newer clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and also Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Shiraz, another favourite, was also planted. A portion of the Shiraz is used to make a wonderful Rosé with punchy Shiraz character. A perfect summer drink for those stalwart red wine lovers!

The new vineyard blocks have settled down nicely and are beginning to show more complexity in the wines.

In 2010, they planted a tiny bit of Chenin Blanc and Viognier, to add some diversity to their wine portfolio.

Their vineyards are personally cared for and nurtured by Bertus de Clerk and his expert team.

The Nicholls family really love nature and the great outdoors and therefore also offer four great escapes in the Cape:
  • The Pool House at Mitre's Edge Vineyards outside of Stellenbosch
  • Bossieveld House in Arniston
  • Galico House in Langebaan
  • Rietfontein Guest Farm in the Little Karoo
Visiting Mitre's Edge is almost like a home coming - you are welcomed by six dogs, a few ducks and sometimes even by their potbelly pig, Angela!
