Perdeberg Wines

Perdeberg Group - Our Selection of Wines

The Cape mountain zebra is almost entirely endemic to the Cape Floristic Region in South Africa, a World Heritage Site.

Our Unique Proposition
Perdeberg Winery is located in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region near the Paardeberg mountain, a range formerly inhabited by Cape mountain zebra. Proactive conservation efforts are effective in a steady recovery of this threatened species, currently estimated at 4000 animals. Perdeberg offers an Estate quality wine for everyday drinking pleasure at an affordable price, leaving the consumer with post purchase satisfaction not only of the wine, but also for contributing to the conservation of Cape mountain zebra.

    Vineyard Management
Our vineyard team, led by Heinie Nel, understands that our terroir is intricately linked to the quality of our wine and its sustainable management lies at the core of our vineyard management practices.

Our vineyards mainly consist of un-irrigated bush vines and are from Wine of Origin Paarl. Due to various micro climates, the characteristics of the wines are very dimensional and develop concentrated fruit flavours. The accolades of the past decade are testament to the quality of our winemaking.

The grapes are handpicked and delivered to the cellar early in the morning. The grapes are gently crushed whilst using inert gas to prevent oxidation of the juice. White wine grapes are pressed; the juice is separated from the pulp and fermentation follows at 12-14˚C in stainless steel tanks. Lees contact and maturation occurs in stainless steel tanks only. After the primary fermentation of red grapes, the free run wine is pumped off into tanks and the skins are pressed to extract the remaining juice and wine. The pressed wine is blended with the free run wine at the winemaker's discretion. The wine is kept warm and the remaining sugars are converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Maturation of up to 18x months, follows in stainless steel tanks with oak staves.

     Our Unique Proposition
Together with the age old traditions of Dry Land viticulture, Perdeberg’s Dry Land Collection wines are a fine display of the ability of bush vines. Grapes grown under dry land conditions, create intensely flavored and succulent wines, as these stressful conditions result in smaller berries with a lower skin to juice ratio, producing high quality wines.

    Vineyard Management
To ensure environmental sustainability, our vineyards are closely managed in terms of pruning practices; canopy management; shoot density and harvest control.

Our Viticulturist and Cellar Master identify vineyard blocks which are suitable for the Dry Land Collection range and manage these blocks to ensure achievement of the most favorable yield of high quality fruit.

After harvesting, the grapes are delivered to the cellar in crates. Red wine is made from the pulp of red grapes and fermentation occurs together with the grape skins, which give the wine its color. White wine is made by fermenting juice after pressing crushed grapes to extract juice and removing the skins. Rosé wines are either made from red grapes where the juice is allowed to stay in contact with the dark skins long enough to pick up a pinkish color (blanc de noir) or by blending red wine and white wine, which is the case with our Pinot Noir/Chardonnay.

Un-wooded white wines are matured in stainless steel tanks only, whilst wooded white wines mature in French oak barrels which is also the case with our reds. Maturation of up to 18x months occurs in 500L French oak barrels.
