Background


In 2000, wine was made for the first time in several years on Clos du Ciel, once John and Erica Platters Helderberg wine farm. New winemaker André Morgenthal studied philosophy and drama, not winemaking. His interest began when he joined the Wine Culture Society at Stellenbosch University. Then, two years ago, he visited Australia and envisaged making his own wine. Mutual friends introduced him to ex-advertising and fashion exec Peter Aschke, the new owner of Clos du Ciel, who lives a life of perpetual summers, in South African and in France. Morgenthals immediate aim is to bottle the current maiden vintage safely, and in long-term equip the small cellar with fine kit.
