Wine has been made at Kleine Zalze since 1695. Today, this family-owned winery, 3 km outside Stellenbosch, in the heart of the Cape Winelands, continues the tradition of producing wines of outstanding quality.

Kleine Zalze Wine Estate also includes the award-winning Terroir Restaurant, a Top 10 South African Restaurant since 2004, as well as the 47 bedroom, 4 star Kleine Zalze Lodge. The De Zalze Golf Course crosses over Kleine Zalze’s land, and the synergistic lifestyle offerings available on the estate all live up to the same quality standards as Kleine Zalze’s award winning wines. The facilities are interlinked and visitors are encouraged to enjoy them together as part of a lifestyle experience. By having a golden thread run through its operations in terms of quality standards, Kleine Zalze successfully combines superlative winemaking with hospitality and service excellence.

Since Kobus Basson purchased the property in 1996, extensive modernisation and upgrading of the cellar has been undertaken, and the vineyards were replanted with new clones. Numerous local and international awards and accolades that Kleine Zalze’s wines have received indicate that these investments have been worthwhile, and that the continuous striving for quality adds value for our customers.

Kleine Zalze’s philosophy is simple: success begins in the vineyards and exceptional wines are made possible by careful management of the farm's natural assets via innovative canopy management and the selection of vine clones that are specifically suited to the various soils and slopes.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking methods are aided by modern equipment, resulting in wines of a uniquely South African style. The intensity of the 'New World' in its full fruit flavours, combine with the elegance and structure of the 'Old World', yielding wines of character, complexity, and balance, reflecting our given terroir and climate. This refined approach to viticulture and winemaking, together with the attention to detail and the personal touch that goes with being a family-owned estate, contribute to the ongoing success of Kleine Zalze’s wines.

Kleine Zalze wines are ranged in three tiers: The flagship Family Reserve range, the Vineyard Selection range, and the Cellar Selection range. Recent years have seen consistent successes across the entire range, both locally and internationally.

In addition to successes on the wine-front, Kleine Zalze’s approach to business, brand management and market development has also achieved high levels of recognition. In June 2008, the company was awarded the Financial Mail “WINE COMPANY OF THE YEAR” and “EXPORT STAR” Awards. Focal points of the judging criteria were sound business practices, alongside sustainable growth and development of the operations across markets.

'Terroir' restaurant is set amidst old oaks, lush vineyards, and rolling terraces, and specialises in French-Mediterranean cuisine blended with a charming Cape twist. It offers a chalkboard menu of Provencal classics, inspired by the best of what is fresh, seasonal and local. Matched with excellent wines, Michael Broughton’s creations are deceptively simple, such as classic bouillabaisse, prawn risotto, or Terroir’s signature dish, the succulent pork belly which is roasted over a wood-fired oven.

Terroir has achieved the highest restaurant award in South Africa, named as the Eat Out Restaurant of the Year 2007, and also the first winner of the Eat Out Service Excellence Award. In addition, Terroir was awarded the Dine Top 10 award and the Great Wine Capitals of the World Best South African Wine Tourism Restaurant.

Set alongside the first fairway of the De Zalze Golf Course, the 47-roomed lodge is surrounded by 120 hectares of vineyards, and offers panoramic views of the Stellenbosch Mountains and all the regular comforts associated with four-star accommodation.

Guests can enjoy breakfast in a spectacular setting on the terrace, while renowned chef Nic van Wyk offers comfortable, home-away-from-home food for lunch and dinner at the Kleine Zalze Lodge restaurant, exposing visitors to the best quality, fresh produce that the Cape has to offer.

Guests of The Kleine Zalze Lodge receive preferential green fees at De Zalze Golf Course, which is within walking distance of the Lodge. Other Lodge facilities include a 17m x 6m rim-flow pool, sauna and gym. In addition, guests can enjoy vineyard walks, make use of mountain bike trails and wine tasting at Kleine Zalze’s Cellar Door.

In co-ordination with the Kleine Zalze Lodge and Restaurant, functions and events can be held in a separate, fully equipped function venue, situated next to the wine cellar. This modern and tasteful venue provides exciting views into Kleine Zalze’s barrel maturation cellar and wine operations, as well as De Zalze golf course.

One of only three golf clubs in the world set amongst working vineyards and a winery (the others being Steenberg and Wente in California), the De Zalze Golf Course winds around the vineyards of the Kleine Zalze estate, criss-crossing the Blaauwklippen River. The De Zalze Golf Course, which opened to the public at the beginning of December 2000, has already become one of the premier golf estates in South Africa. The course was host to the World Amateur Championship in conjunction with the Stellenbosch Golf Club and the Eisenhower Trophy (for men), and the Espirito Santo Trophy (for women) in 2006.

The 18-hole course, designed by Peter Matkovich, has an excellent mix of parkland holes, which places maximum premium on accuracy. The Clubhouse, built in a classic Cape Dutch design, is blessed with some of the most spectacular views of vineyards and mountains.
