Bon Courage Estate - a tradition of quality

Where the Klaas Voogds River joins the Breede River, 9 kilometres from Robertson on the R317, lies Bon Courage Estate. The winesales is situated in the serene Cape Dutch homestead that dates back to 1818.

The farm, Goedemoed was acquired in 1927 by the Bruwer patriarch, Willie. He planted steen and muscadel that was sold to the KWV. In 1965 his son André, the present owner –settled on the farm. He introduced drip irrigation; modernized the cellar and purchased a neighboring farm. In 1983 the farm was registrated as a wine estate and he named it Bon Courage. (The French for Goedemoed). André started marketing a small selection of his wines –receiving his first ‘Superior’ award –one in many to follow! From the start André’s target was for supreme quality wines and every year that followed, the wines were rewarded accordingly! (As soon as in 1984, 1985 and 1986 he was South African Champion Estate Winemaker of the Year - putting Robertson Valley truly on the ‘wine’ map!!).

Andre was the first winemaker from the Breede River Valley to receive the prestigious Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Award in 1990. Bon Courage was also a pioneer in the valley with the following: night harvesting; importing a mechanical harvester; building an underground cellar and making a sparkling wine according to the French tradition.

Jacques, his son, joined the estate in 1990. Gradually André shifted his attention more and more to the vineyards while Jacques focused on the vinification. Today this prestigious wine estate enjoys the expert attention and dedication of this truly complementary team. Their experience, commitment and love for wine allow them to produce a selection of the country’s finest wines, which include noble whites, classic reds, fortified wines, as well as sparkling wines and their well-known Cap Classiques.

Bon Courage Estate has been the recipient of many awards, trophies, double gold and gold medals, both locally and internationally. Bon Courage is truly a versatile estate –the following awards are proof of it. Bon Courage Gewürztraminer Special Late Harvest received the prestigious Diners Club Winemaker of the Year award and its Shiraz the sought after General Smuts Trophy. Jacques Bruére Brut Reserve was the winner of Wine Magazine Cap Classique Challenge as well as the Classic Wine Trophy Show. In 2007 Bon Courage was crowned as the Best Value Wine Cellar in South Africa by the Wine Magazine –the first estate ever to take the title. Its Chardonnay also won a gold medal internationally on the Chardonnay du Mondé.

This then, in brief, is the story of Bon Courage –blessed with a wide range of quality wines at affordable prices. The ultimate test of the whole complex process of winemaking is in the drink. Try the wines for yourself! André and Jacques Bruwer are proud and confident of the superlative quality of the wines of Bon Courage, which will most definitely satisfy every discerning palate.
