TOP OF THE TABLE
On this 190 ha estate, 162 ha are planted to ~ 70% red and 30% white grape cultivars, producing between 7 - 10 ton per hectare. The Kaapzicht team is driving a rapidly expanding business with growing local and export markets. Wines are being exported under the "Kaapzicht", "Steytler" and "Friesland" labels to countries throughout Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia.
This family-owned wine estate was first bought by the Steytler Family in 1946. In 1984 the estate was renamed 'Kaapzicht' after the breathtaking view from the farm’s hills over Cape Town and Table Mountain and the first estate wine was bottled under the Kaapzicht label.
The Kaapzicht range of wines includes easy drinking "Best-Value-for-Money wines", whites and reds at different price points and increasing oak maturation, as well as a fortified desert wine and a grape juice. To complete the range a Kaapzicht Grape Spirit (Grappa) and a French oak matured Pot Still Brandy have been added. Only the finest selection of classic grapes, grown on the estate, are used to make this brandy. The rest is careful craftsmanship, hard work and patience.
Danie Steytler is not just a Master Winemaker and member of the prestigious Cape Winemaker's Guild, his wine making is also his passion. Danie lives for creating the perfect wine and with this dedication he has managed to put together a range of wines that challenge the best.
International Awards are not in short supply at Kaapzicht: a Gold medal at Air France Preteux Bourgeois Classic Trophy, several gold and silver medals at the Concours Mondial in Brussels and at the International Wine Challenge in London, Gold at Mundus Vini in Germany and at Wine for Asia in Singapore. 20 years after the first Kaapzicht wine was bottled, Danie Steytler was awarded two Trophies at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London for the Best Pinotage ('Steytler' Pinotage 2001) and the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy for Best Red Blend ('Steytler' Vision 2001).
Locally there are Veritas Double Gold and Gold Awards on almost the entire range, 4 consecutive Pinotages as winners in the ABSA Top 10 Pinotage Awards, the 1998 Kaapzicht 'Steytler' Pinotage being crowned the 2000 Wine Magazine Champion Pinotage and the next vintage was the Grand Gold overall winner at the Michelangelo Int. Awards, where our other wines have regularly received Gold and Grand Gold medals over the years. Then there are the Gold medals and accolades for Top Scoring/Best Red wine at the Juliet Cullinan Connoisseur’s Awards and in the Swiss Int. Airlines Competition.
Some of our highlights include the 5 stars in the John Platter Wine Guides 2004-6 which have been awarded over 3 consecutive years to our flagship wines Steytler Pinotage 2001 and the Steytler Vision 2001 & 2002.
Kaapzicht is a family affair with several of the Steytler family involved in the running of the Estate: Danie Steytler is the cellarmaster, George, his brother is the viticulturist, Yngvild (Danie’s wife) is the Export Manager and Mandy (George's wife), hires out the functions venue and the self-catering cottage.
The Vineyard Cottage, which is nestled amongst the vines, is a quaint two-roomed self-catering cottage with large veranda and outdoor braai. Enjoy bird watching, wine tasting, horse rides or country walks and experience the view that brought Kaapzicht its name.
Kaapzicht and the Steytler family invite you to hold your next function or ceremony at our venue. We are sure that our fully equipped venue, or the braai/spit area named "Wingerdkraal", with garden, bar and kitchen facilities will provide the setting required for a memorable occasion.
The public is most welcome to visit us and taste our large range of wines. There should be something for everyone's taste! On appointment Danie will show you the cellar and you are also welcome to go for a walk in the vineyards to see the splendid view for yourself.
