A Place of Harmony and Heritage
Our 120-hectare estate blends seamlessly into the natural contours of the Stellenbosch region, where only 50 hectares are under vine—allowing much of the land to remain untouched and protected. The estate’s Tuscan-style architecture was carefully constructed from Table Mountain sandstone and estate-grown timber, echoing a deep reverence for the land.
Founded in April 1998, Waterford Estate has been dedicated to crafting exceptional wines and offering authentic experiences that reflect our enduring values.
The Heart of Waterford – Our Tasting Room
Experience the essence of Waterford Estate in our Tasting Room, where refined hospitality meets the soul of winemaking. Overlooking the cellar and the courtyard, guests are welcomed to a curated selection of our finest wines, poured with passion and insight. It’s a place to pause, connect, and savour—the perfect reflection of the Waterford Way.
Our environmental footprint
Our estate is guided by regenerative farming principles that respect the land and enhance the character of our wines. With the expertise of cellarmaster Mark Le Roux and viticulturist David van Schalkwyk, we believe that vines thrive best in symbiosis with their natural environment, resulting in wines that are balanced, complex, and expressive of their terroir. From nurturing biodiversity to minimal intervention in the cellar, we strive to craft wines that reflect our commitment to sustainability, quality, and legacy.
Our 120 H property blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature, embracing the natural Tuscan-style architecture, this appreciation for nature is embodied throughout the estate and into the vineyards with only 50 H of the property being used for the cultivation of vines.
You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the heart of Provence or the Spanish countryside, with your first glimpse of this enchanting realm. The winery was designed by architect Alex Walker and created from local Table Mountain sandstones from the vineyard and timber grown on the estate. It was styled along the engaging terracotta design of the classic Bordeaux chateaus of France. The centrepiece of the magnificent courtyard is the Waterford fountain. This feature has been immortalised in the Waterford label and represents a fundamental component of our philosophy.
The Waterford Way
Waterford Estate – our home – created to preserve the footprint of nature, the vigour of the vines and to share lasting memories with family and friends through wine. We believe that truly great wine will carry you away to the place of origin and therefore we are committed to ensuring that every bottle of Waterford Estate bestows a sense of belonging. The passion that guides us in our pursuit of excellence is evident in all aspects of Waterford Estate – from the warm welcoming of guests to our passion for conservation. This is our Waterford Way.
The History
The estate has been operating since 1998 and is proudly owned by the Ord family. The name Waterford is a combination of the Ord surname as well as the waterfalls from the mountains that surround the estate (WATERF + ORD). The idea was given by the oldest daughter, Ashleigh Ord.
A Multi-sensory Experience
Upon entering Waterford Estate, you’ll be struck by the natural beauty of our wine farm which is reflected in each of our wines. Spend the day leisurely sipping on one of our distinguished wines, surrounded by the undisturbed views of the Helderberg Mountain. With the wine cellar built surrounding the courtyard, you'll be able to observe the workings of the winery and get a true feel for the winemaking process.
Our Viticultural Team
Our hardworking vineyard experts at Waterford Estate are a group of people that take great pride in what they have achieved in establishing new vineyards and maintaining the existing vineyards and orchards. The viticultural team has just initiated our virus-free vineyard initiative that entails painstaking attention to the vineyards and removing any virus material carefully so as to not disturb the healthy vines. This care of the vines and attention to detail is what adds to the quality of each of our wines and is a testament to their hard work and expertise.
