Waterford Antigo 2021

The Waterford Antigo is a tribute to the red clay-based soils on the estate. It boasts plush red currants, subtle tobacco, and creamy oak sweetness on the nose. The palate mirrors the generous nose, with acidity balancing the exceptional structure, a characteristic of all Helderberg-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Gentle tannins provide a base for the decadent red fruit, leading to a lingering textured finish.

Evolution after 5 years
Ageing is evident in the colour shift, as red mellows to brown at the edges. The smooth tannins and balancing acidity further integrate into the wine as the vibrant fruit character turns to a mature dried fruit quality. This homogenisation contributes to a lasting, fruit-driven finish with a mineral edge. With each sip, the wine unfolds a tapestry of flavours, leaving a memorable impression on the palate.

This vintage expresses the hallmark balance of fruit, flavour, and freshness. Aromas of ripe stone fruit, peach, white apricot, pear, and Golden Delicious apple rise from the glass with inviting clarity. The palate is creamy and textured from extended lees contact, while a subtle, well-integrated soft acidity provides structure and lift. The fruit from the nose follows through beautifully, joined by a subtle thread of minerality that adds depth. A creamy, fruit-driven finish lingers with gentle complexity, showcasing the wine’s poised and polished character.

On the nose, this wine has complex layers of dark berries, ripe plums, cranberries, black olives, leather, vanilla oak and hints of pencil shavings. On the palate, the red blend delivers big, structured layers of fruit, tomato cocktail and wood before it finishes with elegant and lingering velvety tannins; a beautiful example of new-world fruit and old-world elegance.
