Nederburg Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Heady perfume of black berry fruit, cedar spice and a subtle whiff of dried lavender. In the mouth it is gymnastic but muscular: sleek and satiny in texture but with power underpinning it, adding an inky depth. That it has generous black cassis, spiced plum and even tea leaf flavours in abundance goes without saying. With lovely interplay of all the parts – fruit, acid and oak – it is refined, elegant and structured. Beautifully poised, it lingers long.

“I simply love Grenache Rosé - I love it for all the red fruit flavours, the strawberry, pomegranate, red berry fruit and for the last few years we’ve experimented with a single vineyard rosé from Grenache. So the intent was a delightful, softly pink, elegant fruit focused wine but it had to have structure and body and a long finish on the palate - all of this almost contrary to the fact that you press the grape gently and drain off just the freshest ‘free-run juice’ with little or no chance of getting tannins or structure from the skins! We are really thrilled with the result. The most daunting reality is we now have to somehow manage to do the same this vintage!” – Ken Forrester

Initially zesty and lively, it then morphs into a rich, sophisticated toasty, creamy and rounded mouthful with light honeyed lees notes. Rewarding, tasty and flavourful, it balances freshness and liveliness with complexity and structure. Altogether, an appeal mouthful.

That’s what this wine is like when it hits the tastebuds: bold, forthright with a solid muscular squeeze. Nothing is overplayed though, because there is more than enough rich, ripe, succulent fruit to counteract that power and structure from its oaking. Blueberry, blackberry, juicy cherries and then dried herbs, cocoa darkness and vibrant spice - all balance out the tannin and firm frame. Long and rewarding, it’ll do for a Tuesday night casual supper or a more serious dinner.

A subtle pale gold colour in line with a very delicate nose. Freshly baked brioche and biscotti aromas with a rich lees-creaminess and an elegant, lively fine mousse.
