Tempting herb notes overlay riper plum and berry fruit aromas. In the mouth hedgerow fruit or berries and plum flavours are joined by deeper, darker inky nuances of cocoa and cedar. A deceptively soft textured palate also shows intensity with spice and earthiness and some powerful muscularity from time in oak. The tannins are integrated and add structure and grip as well as a dry, oak element to the long fruited tail. Complex and delightful, will benefit from further ageing.

Seductive bouquet of blue and black berry compote with a gentle herb and violet sheen backed by a subtle earthy note. The palate is sensual, sleek and supple initially before a muscular oak grip announces itself. 
Those same blue and black berries and plum fruits are apparent, along with a spicy cedar and light vanilla nuance and herbaceous and earthy undertone. Overall, it’s cohesive and structured with everything in place but there’s a notable brooding muscularity and restrained power with sufficient freshness to balance, which bodes well for maturation, Harmonious and long.

The palate is softly textured and approachable, supple but also muscular with its squeeze of dry tannin from time in barrel. Lovely long, lingering finish which offers up graphite and dried herbs. Layered, complex and rich but also elegant and refined.

Complex bouquet of fruitcake, cedar, cocoa and a perfumed whiff of dried lavender. Broad, fleshy and succulent with all of that the nose promises being delivered on the palate. Spice sprinkled cedar with rich dark fruitcake flavour. Wonderfully soft, rounded and silky palate that shows cohesion and refinement. Impressive density and concentration that doesn’t overwhelm. Nor does the oak used in the maturation of this impressive blend. Plush, comfortable and eminently rewarding with a lingering dry tail.

Harmonious, polished and svelte, the mouthful is a mélange of citrus, vanilla, cream and a light dusting of spice which is so tasty and appealing, all the way to its long, defined finish.

Anthonij Rupert Cape of Good Hope Riebeeksrivier Caroline 2020

Good rainfall brought much needed relief from the severe drought experienced in the preceding 3 years. Warm periods during winter and fluctuating temperatures during spring resulted in smaller berries and some uneven bunch development. Gale force winds and cool growing conditions led to significantly lower yields, especially in the Chenin Blanc vineyards. Moderate temperatures during December and January delayed the onset of harvest slightly, but the lower yields and early heat waves in February resulted in a short and compact white wine vintage.

Good integration of oak and fruit with fine, dry tannins and an intriguing light licorice/saline element on the long tail. Bold, enticing ripe blackberry and plum aroma. Gentle, soft-fruited entry to the mouth. The juicy blackberry- and plum flavours are immediately apparent – along with a subtle tinge of spice. Rounded, fleshy and voluptuous texture with a light squeeze of tannin. Structured but pliable and generous with a rewardingly long, velvet tail.

The lovely zip and intensity of the acidity are tempered by the broader, creamy lees and biscuit notes, along with a marmalade tang on the tail. A chalky grip adds body to the layered palate. Pure, unadulterated heady litchi perfume! No Ersatz essence notes whatsoever. Light potpourri whiff adds dimension and depth to the nose.

The same holds true for the flavour. Undoubtedly distilled litchi spirit, it’s tropically fruity with an almost Turkish Delight exoticism. It’s smooth and gentle without any harsh spirit bite or aggression. The spirit lingers long in the mouth, finishing dry yet leaving a beautiful distinct flavour memory.

Pale lemon colour, bright and clear, with a hypnotic steady stream of vigorous, fine bubbles. The nose offers up subtle orange blossom with marmalade and oyster shell nuances mingling with baked sourdough bread. Vibrant, energetic fizz with grapefruit, lemon and lime vivacity in the mouth. A trace of salinity is present too, adding to the enjoyment of the crunchy zip and vitality. It then segues into a richer, creamier, genteel and silky smooth mouthful of lees, toast and baked bread tinged with a twist of citrus zest. The maritime notes of briny sea air and oyster shell are present too. Succulent and fresh but also taut, crisp and dry. Lovely tension and restraint but with power and generosity too. Seamless integration and marvelous refinement and persistence of flavour.

A beautiful light brown colour. Ripe apricot, peach and fudge, caramel aromas which mingle with hints of leather and creamy toffee. So appealing Silky smooth and gently textured, the same flavours come through on the palate: ripe peach and apricot fruit notes with cookie dough, fudge and caramel nuances. There’s a depth of flavour and complexity to this spirit but a lightness too. Not at all harsh and truly rewarding with its long, rich finish.
