The wine’s aromatics reflect the terroir in which it is grown, displaying layered notes of leather, spice, smoked savoury meatiness, and aromatic fynbos.

The palate exhibits vibrant acidity, along with notes of violets and red fruits. The Mourvèdre component adds complexity with charred baking spices such as cinnamon, clove, and cumin.

Refined tannins in the wine serve to balance the acidity and provide texture, while allowing the wine to present a more fruit-forward, elegant finish with depth and complexity.

The underlying chalk and slate notes confirm the cool climate origin of the grapes, Elgin. The palate is pristine and precise, with a fine texture from extended lees contact. The finish is long and lingering, culminating in a fruity aftertaste with delicate hints of saline.

The golden hue and subtle green undertones denote the warmer vintage of 2020. The nose follows the look of the wine showing a warm welcoming richness with a lemon-curd undertone serving to add interest to the accompanying light toasty notes. The body of the wine is round and balanced with a fresh acidity bringing tension into the wine while the palate shows honey melon and a rounded toasty oak all balanced by a complex zesty minerality.

A unique blend in its class with the use of Italian and Spanish grape varietals. This wine shows off fruit-forward aromatics of violets, cherries and liquorice accompanied by notes of classical cigar box spice. The Waterford Antigo takes its name from the colour of the soils in which the specific Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard, that makes up majority of the blend, is planted. Waterford Estate is located on the Helderberg Mountain, which is renowned for producing the best red wines in South Africa, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. The red clay and rich soils of this vineyard bring softer and plush elegant fruit to the aromatics. They also create tannins which are richer softer and sweeter to what we are used to on Waterford Estate.

Created by utilising Méthode Champenoise - the classic method of making champagne - our vintage Cap Classique is made from Chardonnay planted on the Estate and defined by secondary characteristics from extended ageing on its lees and in the bottle. The wine has a distinctive mineral backbone, classic brioche yeasty notes and fine bubble structure.

Over two decades of producing this Estate wine, the wine is ever increasing in quality and becoming more consistent in expressing the terroir of the Helderberg Mountains. The 2018 vintage shows pure fruit and earthy notes complimented by classical pencil lead-like aromas and a typical dry tannin structure with a seamless balance to the finish. The vintage can be considered classical in style, with a tight tannin structure and fresh acidity. Being a drought vintage the stress on the vines was sure to create more concentrated grapes, packed with flavour and quality

The wine has a ruby-red colour, leading to smoky cherry and vibrant red fruit aromas that build on the base of subtle licorice spice aromatics. The palate reveals vibrant fruit flavours of cherries and cranberries, with a fresh acidity that adds vibrancy to the wine, a result of the cooler vintage. The tannins are refined and soft, serving to balance the acidity and showcase the salinity in the wine.

The Helderberg mountain in Stellenbosch is know for making wines with good aging potential. This wine has an intense violet red colour. Inviting warms aromas of earthy berries, crushed violets and ripe plums, the palate follows with similar flavours but perceived as slightly fresher and more elegant than expected from the intensity of the aromatics.

Waterford Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023

This Chenin Blanc, shows aromas of dried summer fruits and a mineral characteristic that follows to the palate. The older vineyards impart minerality in the wine, that in tandem with the richly layered mouthfeel, serves to enhance the finely textured body. The palate is concentrated and rich, with green fig adding to the character of the wine. The use of concrete egg fermentation and maturation contributes to the complexity, allowing the wine to showcase the pure essence of Chenin blanc fruit.

Evolution after 5 years

The wine’s aroma will begin to reveal nutty, almost honeyed sweetness, supported by the distinctive Chenin Blanc fruit notes on the nose. Meanwhile, the palate retains its richness in terms of texture and minerality. The ageing of our Old Vine Project Chenin Blanc enriches the wine, enhancing its fullness and complexity over time.
