Shiraz    Stellenbosch

Radford Dale Gravity 2009

In an era where over-blown, in-your-face wines too often take precedence over individually crafted and complex wines, our standard bearer strives to be singular. We aim for equilibrium, between natural sweetness of fruit and integration of structure. Each varietal contributes its unique facets; the Shiraz its persevering spiciness and its gutsy, supple body, the Cabernet its blueberry backbone and dense, ripe tannins, the Merlot its deep red-berry fruit and suave mouth-feel. All knitted together by patient hands-off maturation. This wine bears the hallmark of the region it was reared in and the mineral soils in which it has its roots. Entirely selfishly, it is made with our own palates in mind.

Pinot Noir    Elgin

Radford Dale Freedom Pinot Noir 2011

This Pinot Noir is characterized by its finesse and poise rather than power or richness. It owes its mineral elegance to the soils it grows in and its aromatic berry generosity and depth of flavor to the wonderful climate of Elgin. This Pinot Noir shows remarkable intrigue in its complexity and never fails to enchant with its supple, finely textured palate. We take great pleasure in introducing another vintage of Freedom from one the most exciting wine regions of the Cape winelands.

The Name

Having grown-up in Burgundy -where the over-regulation of the AOC system and the Zombyfying bureaucracy of the EU act as a maddening straight-jacket to any creativity or innovation- Alex Dale cut loose upon arriving in South Africa in 1994, weeks after Nelson Mandela became the 1st democratically-elected President. Free from EU regulation dictating such aspects as methods of planting, pruning & trellising, levels of yields, residual sugar, acidity, alcohol etc. decreeing even which bottle shape is legal or illegal, and even the fundamental right to plant vines at all, Alex experienced for the very first time the total freedom to act as his heart and mind felt would allow the greatest quality, in this magnificent and untampered-with vinescape. Freedom to challenge ourselves against nature rather than regulation and Freedom to be wrong or right, rather than, absurdly, a regulatory outlaw ! In the spirit of an electrifyingly exciting, newly-democratic South Africa, this burst of liberty sewed the seed for the creation of Radford Dale’s passionately crafted Freedom Pinot Noir. And as luck would have it, Nelson Mandela had just completed his long walk to freedom and become President that year too…

Chardonnay    Stellenbosch

Radford Dale Chardonnay 2010

With strong influence of Alex Dale’s upbringing in Burgundy, the making of this Chardonnay is also adapted to our particular conditions in this ocean-facing part of the Cape –our mineral geology and temperate maritime climate both lending much to the equation. Restraining acidity, citrus flavours and integrated oaking the introverted side of its character; ripeness and great persistence on the palate the more expansive side. Genuinely mineral, with a crisp lime-citrus edge and an elegant yet intense durability. A Chardonnay striving to be individual, focused on backbone not butter.

Radford Dale Black Rock Red Blend 2009

The vibrant and immensely lively purple hue of this wine shines out of the glass. Its intricate spice, licorice and wild bush aromas grab your curiosity, whilst preparing the senses for a highly individual and aromatic palate. A vinous and wonderfully charged mouthfeel combines with an array of lavender, spices and blueberries. A distinctly mineral quality pervades through the palate and creates lift and freshness in the flavours and a subtle, full and complex finish. A highly individual, enigmatic wine; a true blend. As refreshing by its palate as it is by its approach.

Chenin Blanc    Steelenbosch

The Winery of Good Hope Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2012

Chenin is an extremely versatile grape, able to make excellent wines in many different guises, from Late harvest to Straw wine to classic dry Chenin and even Méthode Champenoise. This example is a wonderfully lively, intense, fruity and beautifully balanced dry Chenin Blanc. With flavours of citrus, sherbet and flint there is plenty of leesy mouthfeel and purity of fruit, whilst finishing with a refreshing lime and mineral length. A true noble varietal, Chenin deserves to be taken seriously - even for everyday drinking wines such as this.

Shiraz    Stellenbosch

Radford Dale Shiraz 2009

Our objective is the best of both worlds (i.e. Northern & Southern Hemisphere characteristics): classic, spicy, peppery Shiraz, with layers of firm, ripe tannins and minerality - woven into abundant juicy fruit. Our challenge each vintage is to accomplish balance; not easy in our sunny climate. This Shiraz has power and restraint, backbone and fruit. A combination of attributes representing what the Cape has the potential to do best, with the varietal many people believe to be the most well-suited to this region.
