Nederburg Double Barrel Reserve 2023

Think about meeting someone for the first time - and they shake your hand a little too firmly. That’s what this wine is like when it hits the tastebuds: bold, forthright with a solid muscular squeeze. Nothing is overplayed though, because there is more than enough rich, ripe, succulent fruit to counteract that power and structure from its oaking. Blueberry, blackberry, juicy cherries and then dried herbs, cocoa darkness and vibrant spice - all balance out the tannin and firm frame. Long and rewarding, it’ll do for a Tuesday night casual supper or a more serious dinner.

Amber with a burgundy undertone. Mulberries, vanilla, glazed cherries and dried fruit with cinnamon, cedar wood and mint in the background. Raspberries and cherry fruit cake, milky chocolate, vanilla and subtle hints of thyme. Smooth and full bodied with lingering fruit and well integrated oak.

Aromas of raspberry, cherry, blueberry and pomegranate are also found on the crisp yet juicy palate. The almost chalky, dry grip of the pomegranate is such a lovely contrast to the bright fruitiness of the berries that it adds texture and breadth. Overall, the wine is more weighty and has a greater presence in the mouth than expected. It also helps to elongate and stretch out the dry finish while the flavour lingers long

This is a very fragrant and delicate wine but with amazing concentration and depth of flavour. A bouquet of fresh strawberries, dried rose petal and dried herbs gives way to a dancing palate with zippy acidity and flavours of wild bramble with hints of all-spice that are perfectly balanced with a fine and supple tannin structure.
