in the vineyard : Meticulous care has gone into the production of J.C. Le Roux La Chanson - care which begins in the vineyard.
Three bushed or trellised vines are planted per metre and each hectare comprises 3 333 vines. The vines are planted in deep red soil at altitudes of 50 to 150 m. The types of rootstock selected are Richter 99 and 110. The grapes used for the blend were the best selected from different vineyards, and came from vines ranging in age from 10 to 15 years.
The Pinotage and Shiraz grapes flourish in the climate of the Coastal Region and are not irrigated. During the ripening season, the average annual maximum and minimum temperatures are 28°C and 15°. During the vintage season, they were 28°C and 16°C. The average annual rainfall during the growing season, from October to March, is 170 mm. During the vintage season it was 123 mm.
about the harvest: The Pinotage grapes were picked at 22° Balling, and the Shiraz grapes at 21° Balling. During the harvest, they were carefully picked by hand and placed in small baskets to prevent bruising.
in the cellar : In the cellar, the juice fermented in steel tanks for 48 hours and under cold fermentation for a further six days. After clarifying filtration and selection, the wine was finally blended and carbonated in an average ratio of Pinotage to Shiraz. Thereafter, the wine was matured for three months in the bottle before being released.
J.C. Le Roux La Chanson is the wine of choice for those who enjoy a slightly sweet sparkling wine with a robust and lively character. This wine is a blend of the Pinotage cultivar, a unique variety developed at the Cape, and the well-known Shiraz variety.
