Spier Private Collection Malbec 2003

SA Young Wine Show 2004 - Gold
Best in Class Silver - International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2005
The wine is dark plum in colour with a youthful purple edge. Inviting aromas of berry fruit are complemented by hints of smoky oak and whiffs of marzipan and nuts. The fruity flavours follow through on the rich, smooth palate where they are joined by appealing caramel and supported by firm acid.

Serve with rich red meat such as beef or venison, or flavourful fish dishes.

ageing : Enjoy now or within 5 years from harvest.

in the vineyard : Grapes from selected vineyard blocks were hand-harvested at between 25.5° and 26° Balling, destemmed and cooled down to approximately 12°C.

Climate:
Average Temperature: Winter 12.5°C; Summer 21.5°C
Proximity to ocean: 30km
Annual Rainfall: 650mm

Soil:
Hutton and Clovelly

Vineyard:
Eight year-old trellised vines planted on southwest-facing slopes yielded the grapes for this wine. The vineyards received supplementary drip irrigation and produced 8 tons per hectare.

in the cellar : Cold soaking preceded temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the fermentation was completed in oak barrels. Maturation in a combination of 1st- and 2nd-fill American and French oak barrels broadened the flavours and added complexity and finesse.
