in the vineyard : Prof. Orffer during the years between 1958 and 1962 created a cultivar by crossing Sémillon and Crouchen Blanc, better known as Cape Riesling. In 1997 an experimental block was planted on the farm Klipvlei near Perdeberg Mountain. The Geldenhuys brothers now grows 1.2 hectares on Swartland- type soil, which consists of well-drained shale and some clay with good water-retention properties. This vineyard receives minimum water and the irrigation system is purely for an “insurance policy”. Vines are trellised on a the 5-wire Extended Perold system with movable wires and are carefully spur pruned and manipulated by specialized canopy management techniques to ensure optimal use of the abundant sunlight. Grapes are thinned to ripen as evenly as possible for best results.
about the harvest: Every vintage normally starts with the harvesting of Nouvelle, carefully handpicked in the cool early mornings for optimum flavour ripeness.
