Villiera Pinotage 1999

The wine has a rich purple colour, showing youth. This is a new-style Pinotage with subtle oak spice, plums and vanilla on the nose with soft tannins on the palate. The wine is well balanced and can be enjoyed now with the potential to age for a further 5 years. There is a sophisticated dryness to the wine with a delicious berry fruit character.

in the cellar : Pinotage is now very much in vogue and being a uniquely South African grape (a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut - originally called Hermitage) it is in demand on many overseas markets and is also receiving a lot of attention locally by producers and consumers. 1999 is the fourth vintage of Pinotage to be released by Villiera, in very limited quantities. The fruit used for this wine came from 20 year old vines with a yield of 8 tons/ha. The wine was matured for 6 months in American White Oak barrels (70% new) after which it was bottled without being filtered (a deposit in the bottle can therefore be expected).
