The 2005 Elgin Vintners Shiraz is our maiden release.
This elegant Shiraz evokes memories of the Crozes-Hermitage style Shiraz as is found in the Northern Rhône of France. The aromatic intensity of the nose is enhanced by loads of freshly ground pepper and a classic spiciness, which follows through onto the palate. Rich and well balanced this wine displays perfect phenolic ripeness.

ageing : The Elgin Vintners Shiraz 2005 drinks exceptionally well now, but will benefit from a further few years in the bottle.

in the vineyard : Within the Elgin Valley Biosphere six growers have jointly formed Elgin Vintners. This allows the members to access outstanding quality grapes from a variety of sites within their ranks. Each of the selected vineyards contributes something unique to the final product.

These grapes were harvested from two year vines on Elgin Orchards. Clone SH 99; 22; 9; 5 grafted onto the rootstock Richter 101-14 Mgt. The soil type is Tukulu and Pinedene.

in the cellar : Because of the youth of the vines, small experimental parcels of the Shiraz were vinified separately by Clive Torr and Niels Verburg. The result was so exciting that Elgin Vintners decided to bottle the wine. The final blend is a 50% Niels contribution using second fill Hermitage French Oak barrels and a 50% Clive contribution, using second fill American oak barrels.
