in the vineyard : Allesverloren Estate - the oldest wine estate in the Swartland famous for its distinctive red wines - is situated on the south-eastern slopes of the Kasteelberg near the quaint town of Riebeek West. The farm was named in 1704 after the early settlers returned to their isolated farm from a long journey to find it plundered and their house burnt to the ground - hence the name Allesverloren, meaning 'all is lost'. Undeterred, those early settlers soon re-established the farm as a successful concern. The farm has been in the Malan family since 1872 and present owner Danie Malan, who has achieved more than his fair share of success, is the fifth generation on the farm.

The grapes were selected from trellised vineyards ranging in altitudes from 270m to 340m above sea level. These vines were planted from 1954 onwards in Malmesbury shale and were cultivated under dryland conditions.

about the harvest: The grapes were handpicked at 26° Balling from 12 until 16 March.
