The Winery of Good Hope Sauvignon Blanc 2006

This fresh and lively Sauvignon Blanc typifies an attractive and approachable Southern Hemisphere style, whilst combining some of the depth and crispness more often associated with the cooler regions of this grape's Northern origins. It finishes dry and mineral, yet with aromatic zest and great palate length. South Africa is making a name for itself as a naturally ideal origin for producing great Sauvignon Blanc and this excellent and very affordable example shows you why.

in the vineyard : In order to combine complexity & fresh minerality with fruitiness & drinkability, we selected parcels of Sauvignon from two areas. The first from the mountainous, cool-climate fruit-growing growing area of Villiersdorp, near Elgin and the second from the Atlantic-facing slopes of the western part of Stellenbosch. The former giving us the acidity and minerality forming the backbone of the wine, the latter giving intensity of flavours, gooseberry and plenty of fruit. Yields were restricted to about 7 T / ha or 45 hectolitres per hectare.

about the harvest: The 2006 vintage was a particularly good one for Sauvignon Blanc, with an extended ripening season due to cooler evenings and overcast periods during the Summer. This allowed for better balance and more minerality than in hotter vintages –such as 2005. All grapes were handpicked.
