Mont du Toit Les Coteaux 2004

John Platter Wine Guide - 3 stars
A generous fruit-driven wine with hints of ripe cassis, black cherry and other intense berry flavours. Ripe tannins and integrated oak flavours make a well structured wine with smooth and lengthy aftertaste.

ageing : This wine may be enjoyed now or cellared for 5 to 8 years.

in the vineyard : Viticulturist: Pieter-Niel Rossouw
Origin: Paarl, Western Cape Situated on the foothills of the Hawequa mountain, overlooking Wellington.
Climate: Cold and wet winter, moderate spring which led to a good, extended ripening season.
Terroir: Weathered granite and sandy loam soils in the lower parts of the vineyards.
Vintage notes: Dormancy was shorter than expected this season and winter was dry with less rain than usual. Even though the winter had a dry spell, the growing season for the vineyards was good. Ripening period was long and dry too, resulting in small berries and concentrated fruit flavours. The age of the vines varies from 9 to 20 plus years.

in the cellar : Grapes are handpicked and meticulously sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used for vinification. Each variety used in the blend is vinified on its own, malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel. The wine is only blended after it has matured for 12 months in the barrel. Another 10 months in the barrel and approx. 6 months in bottle prior to release, ensures optimal maturation for this wine.
