This cultivar, initially known by its experimental name of U2, was developed at Stellenbosch by Prof Chris Orffer.

The grapes were harvested fairly late in the season at 24 degrees Balling. The cold-fermentation of 14-16 °C was stopped at about 26 g/l residual sugar.
