Muratie Laurens Campher 2012

A seamless blend of four varietals to create a uniquely South African wine honouring one of the country’s wine pioneers. Lively fresh lemon and lime notes from the Chenin and Sauvignon Blancs are given added interest with fragrant floral hints from the Verdelho and Viognier components. On the palate, the wine is elegant and complex with flavours of honeysuckle, lime marmalade and fresh almonds, all wrapped in creamy oak. Zippy acidity runs through the wine until the eminently satisfying, lengthy finish. A worthy flagship for the estate.

This wine is best savoured with creamy chicken dishes, possibly with a touch of mild, aromatic spice.

in the vineyard : Governor Simon van der Stel granted Muratie to a young German soldier way back in 1685. His name was Laurens Campher and he had a great love of the soil. However, he had an even greater love - a slave girl named Ansela van de Caab. For 14 years, he'd walk 64 km (a 3-day trip) to see his beloved Ansela. When she was eventually emancipated, Ansela returned as Laurens' wife to Muratie. To this day the oak she planted to bless their marriage still stands... in the same soil Laurens loved so much.

in the cellar : No inoculation was done and the wine fermented wild for almost three months. Buttonage was done on a weekly basis till the malo-lactic fermentation was finished after which all the barrels was topped and sealed.

All cultivators except the Sauvignon Blanc was barrel fermented but everything was matured in barrel for six months. 30% was first fill barrels and the rest was second and third fill French barrels.
