Laibach Widow's Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Like we said before we do want to show an elegant wine which have potential to last 10 - 15 years after vintage. Medium red colour with oodles of blackcurrant, leather and spice. Young and vibrant palate with great dimensions of flavour, well supported by some expensive oak.

ageing : A wine with enough complexity, body and character to last 10 years after vintage.

in the vineyard : This is one of our Pinnacle wines in our range. This wine is only produced in some exceptional vintages. The previous one was the 2007. Block 1 Cabernet was nearly a block of Shiraz, but luckily the previous owner, a widow, recommended that this is Cabernet Sauvignon area. What an intelligent piece of advice, because this block is now outstanding. We produce maximum 18 barrels from this block and we only use the top 20 rows. No irrigation is used and it is farmed organically since 2000. We have a natural low crop around 25 - 30 hecto liters per hectare which is less than a First Growth vineyard.

We like to show modern fruit, but with old world charm, something we believe can only be achieved with no irrigation. One can only talk about terroir if the roots are anchored deep enough in the soil, at least 1 - 2 meters deep. With irrigated vineyards the plant is spoiled and the roots will never go and look for water.

about the harvest: The grapes are handpicked towards the middle of March.

in the cellar : After destemming we sort manually to remove unwanted green herbaceous stems. A light crushing follows and the wine is gently moved to small open top 4 ton fermentation vessels. It is immediately inoculated with selected yeast that has proven itself in the last few vintages. Extraction is again done with manual punch downs. A short quick fermentation follows and then we do allow a short maturation after fermentation to soften tannins. The wine is pressed in a new modern Scharfenberger press. The warm juice goes to 100% new selected French oak barrels for 16 - 20 months maturation. A filtration before bottling does happen.
