in the cellar : Winelovers may remember that back in 1986 Weltevrede made a once-off release of a Red Muscadel called Oupa se Wingerd (Grandpa's Vineyard), which had its origin in the so-called Oupa se Wingerd, planted in 1926 by the founder of Weltevrede, Klaas Jonker.
Today, 780 of the original vines, declared a National Monument, are still harvested and form part of the 1998 Oupa se Wyn Red Muscadel.
Grapes for Oupa se Wyn are harvested at an average of 25º Balling, crushed and allowed 36 hours of skin contact. Use is made of enzymes and a special pump-over and press-through process to extract the maximum colour and character. Thereafter the juice is separated and fortified with neutral wine spirits before fermentation can take place, in order to retain the natural grape sugar.
