Rust en Vrede Estate Merlot 1999

Deep red, bright, purple hints. Initial smell of cherry and ripe plum notes, coffee, warm touches of fruits with alcohol. On the palate their are warm aromas from the maturing in wood, tannins are already blended in a rounded harmonious way, good length.

in the vineyard : Vineyards situated on north facing slopes and at the end of the valley hence slightly warmer conditions. Deep red soils. A mixture of weathered granite and a small percentage of clay, Clovelly and Hutton structure.

about the harvest: The grapes were harvested on 2 March 1999.

in the cellar : WE372 yeast was used and fermentation temperature was about 28ºC. Fermentation on the skins took place over a period of 7 days. Malolactic fermentation followed in stainless steel tanks and the wine was left to mature for 8 months in French oak barriques.
