Uiterwyk Shiraz 1999

The 1999 Shiraz was the Maiden vintage for Uiterwyk Wine Estate. Made in true Northern Rhône tradition, a portion left on the lees of the Viognier in 50% new French oak barrels. True Northern Rhône ripe black fruit, spice and peppery flavours. The Viognier added violet flavours. In a recent tasting in the United Kingdom, the maiden vintage of the Uiterwyk Shiraz was described as a combination of New World and Crozes-Hermitage. Uiterwyk Shiraz has the ripe black fruit of the New World and the spice and pepper intensity of the Northern Rhône.

in the cellar : Oenologist, Daniël de Waal, fermented the Shiraz on Viognier lees, in true Côte Rôtie fashion. Viognier adds a hint of violets to the bouquet and softens the Shiraz. To allow the Shiraz to achieve its full potential, handling in the cellar was minimised.
